This project involved a series of 'interventions' as a means of updating the existing property. These were to replace the existing conservatory to the side (whilst opening up the inside); a replacement family bathroom and the conversion of the attached garage to a study.

The design of the side extension responds to the wishes of the client and 'sense of place'; orientation, surroundings, woodland setting and split level site.

A structural insulated panel (SIPS) system was chosen for its lightweight nature and to replace an all glass structure with a highly insulated one which would be a comfortable, useable space all year round. Timber cladding was chosen to harmonise with the wooded setting and give a particular level of importance to these natural aspects of the site. The opening positions were carefully designed to enhance views and access to external spaces and to control solar gain.

This project was nominated for the Bristol Building Control Excellence Awards 2019.
