This project for a side and rear wraparound extension was all about the response to orientation and a strong client brief. The challenge was to overcome the fact that the rear of the house was orientated NW and so to maximise the amount of light into the extension. This was achieved by a roof form with windows that allowed as much daylight and sunlight in as possible. A white rendered wall to the side of the courtyard reflects alot of this collected light back into the new space. The covered courtyard allows use of outside space even in rainy weather and the internal space opens out onto it resulting in the feeling of a much larger extension and increased use of the garden. The garage was to be retained. This was also taken into account in the 3D form of the extension where the two joined. The design also included office space, a utility room and a WC was tucked under the stairs.
